KNIGHTS JUNIORS SEASON 2011/12
5th November 2011
The Knights Juniors travelled to the Percy Hedley Sports Centre, Newcastle for the first round of the GB Junior league North Division. The Knights jetted off late morning and due to the late flight both U19s and U15s were forced to play 3 games back to back.
KNIGHTS U15s
The U15s started off very slow against Percy Hedley Eagles B, with numerous shots failing to drop through the hoop. It took 5 minutes of play before they clicked into gear and the points started to rack up. There were very little in the way of shots coming from their opposition and the game became one sided. Coach Steven McAleese (Lefty) used the bench well giving valuable court time to the new players in the team.
The second game against the Wakefield Whirlwinds was a tight encounter to start and the young ball handler for the Whirlwinds showed lovely skills netting a few baskets from outside the tight Knights defense. The Knights pressed the ball at half court that resulted in the Whirlwinds loosing possession and the Knights taking advantage with fast breaks.
The final game of the day was very much like the first as the knights thumped Percy Hedley Eagles A. Again Lefty rotated the bench effectively.
The most pleasing part of the round was how the new guys have settled in and now stepping up to the mark in their first league season. Most notably with “Pistol Pete” Peter Lewis adopting a “shoot on site” policy and Aaron “Scoop” Gillen scoring his first competitive basket, the crowd lifted the roof off as they cheered Aarons acheivement. Coach Lefty commented “The guys worked well today, they were solid defensively and punishing in offense. The games were very one sided but lets remember we’ve got beaten by big scores too and that wasn’t that long ago. This season will be a good opportunity for the new guys to gain valuable league experience”.
The second round of games are on the 4th of February 2012. Results from first round of games are;

KNIGHTS U19s
The U19s took to the court with reinforcements from Scotland under the watchful eye of Scottish coach “Pirate” Stevie Duff. The U19s jelled well and put in 3 good back to back performances that saw the consistent James MacSorley moving the ball well and around the other team members. The spice girls of the team Eimear MacSorley & Simone Mathews worked hard and got into great shooting positions in the key undetected. Cameron Campbell’s outside shot is still a weapon and Adam Bamford is showing that he can sink a basket under pressure. Stevie Duff commented “The guys are playing well as a team they are working the options well and now understand how to use them effectively”.
All three games came back to back and the travelling didn’t distract the team too much as the notched up 3 wins from 3 games.
